24 and 36 oz/yd2 Woven Roving
Woven Roving
Owning a fiberglass boat is a big investment that takes regular inspection, maintenance, and repairs to keep the hull in top condition for maximum enjoyment and safety when on the water. ResTex Composites is dedicated to providing premium quality materials and products used in the construction and repair of fiberglass boat hulls, including woven roving, a fiberglass cloth used in the lamination process.
Woven roving is a bidirectional fabric material made from continuous glass fibers that are woven together into a cloth and interlaced into heavy weight fabrics, providing strength and durability. Woven roving is typically used between layers of mat for strong laminates.
Woven roving is combined with resin to form a composite lamination that is compatible with all kinds of resins available at ResTex Composites. The affordable, high-quality woven roving available at ResTex is used to laminate large flat areas of boat hulls that require a rapid buildup and highest strength reinforcement. Plain leaf design elements provide equal strength for both horizontal and vertical directions.
The tensile strength and impact-resistant properties in woven roving lamination can be used to reinforce a coating or other composite system, and makes it ideal for the process of fiberglass boatbuilding.
Boatbuilding with Fiberglass Woven Roving
Woven roving is often used with chopped strand mat (CSM) to reinforce other materials and make repairs. In boatbuilding, the CSM keeps it from being compatible with epoxy. Otherwise, woven roving is compatible with all of the resins on this site. Woven roving is an inexpensive way to quickly laminate large, flat areas for rapid build-up and reinforcement of fiberglass boats.
Woven roving is used with chopped strand mat, and a polyester or vinyl ester resin for a strong, light-weight, and is a great looking fiberglass composite. With the woven roving at ResTex, you can depend on getting the same sizing, finish, and handling characteristics with every purchase.
Some features which make woven roving materials or fabrics ideal for boatbuilding include:
● Woven roving material can be draped into unique complex shapes
● Used for open mold fiberglass parts where additional strength is needed
● Wets out easily
● Increase in flexibility and strength
● Great for repairs or quick buildups
● Cost efficient
Woven roving can be balanced with the same number of rovings in each direction or unbalanced with more rovings in one direction. If extra strength is needed in a different direction, another ply must be added at an angle to the first.
Fabrics need to be oriented so the fiber yarns run parallel to the expected loads. If extra strength is needed in a different direction, another ply must be added at an angle to the first. The most common angles are +/- 45 degrees.
