Description;
The Ostrich or Fiddlehead Fern as it is commonly known is prized for its plentiful edible fiddle heads. Not the only fiddle head that can be eaten but by far the most wholesome. Fern grows anywhere between 3 and 8 feet with wide spreading fronds. Likes flood plains and low areas but needs drainage. Found also on rich moist slopes. Good for stream banks and mild erosion areas. This plant will eventually create an underground fabric of long stringy runner roots. From these runner roots emerge new plants. Individual plants send down a semi taproot.
Cultivation / Conditions;
Grows in sandy moist well drained soil. 1 part sand to two parts leaf mold or good composted organic matter. Keep moist. Mulch with deciduous leaves. Will grow in shade to almost full sun as long as it can remain damp.
Propagation;
Ostrich fern shoots runners from the mother rhizome. These runners each with a bud sometimes more can be removed from the main section of rhizome in the early spring and replanted about 1 1/2-2 inches deep. Plant growing plants with the bud section or crown about 1/3 of an inch above the soil. Mulch with deciduous leaves.
Companions;
Trout lily, Blood Root, False Solomon's Seal, Sensitive fern, Blue Cohosh, Yellow Violet, Wild Leek, Joe Pye Weed.
