CLE CREDIT MAY BE APPLIED TO BECOME ACCREDITED BY THE DEPT. OF VETERANS AFFAIRS Representing clients seeking veterans benefits and claims under social security & disability laws have recently become among the most popular and steady practice areas. Social security programs are a significant source of cash and health benefits for individuals with disabilities. However, the procedures and formalities of a large federal agency can be intimidating for an unrepresented claimant. Related and often parallel issues arise in the context of veterans’ benefits. Nearly two million veterans have returned from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of the 1.3 million veterans who have been discharged since 2001, almost half have filed for disability compensation claims. He retired in 2001 from the U.S. Air Force with nearly 33 years of combined service, including over 20 years of active military, in the Air Force, Air Force Reserves, and Air National Guard (Active/Guard Reserve). Michael Shea is a retired CW5 Army aviator and lawyer who spent more than 20 years with his state's Army National Guard. He served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Blackhawk Medevac pilot and did a tour of duty as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps. He has practiced law for over three decades. Returning from Iraq after his second tour in 2008, Mr. Shea realized that there is a need for effective, empathetic and reasonably priced representation for those veterans and their families who find themselves facing debt collection issues, divorce, and post-decree issues involving child support and parental responsibilities. He is a trained mediator and provides mediation services as a third party, to help military families through the transition from deployment to home station and the transitions from active duty or Guard to retirement. Mr. Shea is accredited by the VA to assist veterans in filing for VA Pension Benefits.
