Biography of Seminar Faculty:

1. L. Stephen Bowers is a Member of Cozen O'Connor, where he focuses his practice on ERISA, pension, profit-sharing and welfare benefit plans. He also assists clients in the areas of health privacy, corporate and tax law. Mr. Bowers has spoken and written widely in the Health Care & Life Sciences fields, including on Employer Obligations under the Affordable Care Act, Implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Health Care FSAs, avoiding Tax Penalties, and Retiree Health Claims, among others. He is a graduate of Boston University School of Law.

2. John M. Peterson practices at Kaufman & Canoles, where he brings over four decades of experience as both a practicing attorney and CPA in the areas of retirement plans and employee benefits. A member of the Firm's Employee Benefits, ESOPs & Executive Compensation, Business Taxation, Labor & Employment, and Healthcare Practice Groups, Mr. Peterson has extensive teaching experience on ERISA matters and 27 years as an adjunct professor at one of the country's most respected law schools. His employee benefits practice focuses on creative retirement plan design, particularly 401(k) and cash balance pension plans, and all aspects of Health Care Reform, particularly planning for the employer mandate. Mr. Peterson is listed in "Best Lawyers in America," as a "Super CPA," and serves on the Employee Benefit Committee of the American Institute of CPAs.

3. Martha Ann Knutson has spent over 20 years representing hospitals, individual providers and organizations in both private and in-house practice. Ms. Knutson has tried cases and appeals in numerous federal and state courts. She served on the legal team that successfully "wrote the law" on indemnity and contributions before a nine-member en ban DC Court of Appeals. Certificated in Healthcare Corporate Compliance by the Compliance Certification Board, Ms. Knutson has counseled health systems on implementing Compliance & Ethics programs. Ms. Knutson has written and spoken extensively on health law, medical records, health compliance, and HIPAA, among others. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance from the George Washington University Law School.
