Biography of Seminar Faculty:

1. Jay G. Safer is a Partner at Locke Lord, where has experience handling complex litigation and arbitration in the United States and abroad. Mr. Safer represents clients in matters concerning contracts, antitrust, securities, RICO, qui tam, international litigation and arbitration, including application of New York Convention and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitration awards, insurance, construction, real estate, employment, media, product liability, health care, professional ethics, financial, constitutional and regulatory issues. He also counsels clients on commercial matters, including protection and preventive measures, creation of risk litigation plans, e-signature, e-discovery and e-readiness, and pre-litigation analysis. Mr. Safer has been appointed by numerous members of the judiciary to advise on matters ranging from commercial matters to the planning committee of the judicial conference of an entire U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He is the Past Chair of the 2,000 member Federal & Commercial Litigation Section of his state bar association and is the Co-Chair of its Federal Judiciary Committee. Mr. Safer has spoken widely on civil litigation issues and litigation skills, including cross examination for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, professional ethics, and e-discovery. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School.

2. Joseph K. Hetrick practices in the mass torts and product liability group of Dechert LLP. He focuses his practice on product liability defense, with an emphasis on pharmaceutical and medical device cases. He defended Philip Morris in tobacco litigation and represented Baxter Healthcare in the factor concentrate mass tort litigation throughout the world. He was part of Dechert’s national defense team representing GlaxoSmithKline in the Baycol litigation, and took a lead role in the Paxil litigation in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Mr. Hetrick also plays a central role in the litigation related to a painkiller for Merck & Co., and has served as trial counsel for Wyeth in the fen-phen litigation. He also handles product liability matters for clients such as West Pharmaceutical, York International Corporation, Stryker Corporation, and Airgas, Inc. Mr. Hetrick has been selected among Best Lawyers in America for product liability litigation in the 2007 through 2011 editions.
