Biography of Seminar Faculty:

1. Casey Lide is a Principal with The Baller Herbst Law Group, PC, and is a widely-respected expert on informational privacy. He has co-authored an extensive guidebook on federal privacy law, analyzed the privacy, freedom of information, and open records laws of more than 25 states, and provided counsel on privacy, surveillance, and related issues to numerous public and private clients. He is also a frequent author, speaker, and instructor on these topics. Mr. Lide previously worked in-house for Digital Signature Trust Co., a leading provider of Internet security and authentication tools. He has also held policy-related positions for the Federation of American Research Networks (FARNET) and for EDUCAUSE, a national information technology association of higher education institutions. In this capacity, he represented the association on a variety of legislative and regulatory initiatives, including the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). He has directed working groups and provided policy advice on such topics as advanced networking, wireless communications, Internet security, the digital divide, domain name policy, privacy, federal investment in information technology research, and distance education. Mr. Lide has written numerous articles on municipal broadband applications, CALEA, cable incumbents, UCITA, online commerce, intellectual property, and online defamation.

2. Nick Akerman is a partner at Dorsey & Whitney, where he is a trial lawyer specializing in both complex civil and criminal cases. He has a well-established expertise on the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Statute (RICO), securities fraud, state and federal trade secret laws and post employment restrictive covenants. Mr. Akerman is a nationally recognized expert on computer crime and the protection of competitively sensitive information and computer data. He regularly obtains injunctions for his clients under the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in various federal courts around the country requiring computer thieves to return stolen computer data and prohibiting the dissemination of the data to competitors. He also consults with clients in developing systems, policies and protocols to protect computer data. Mr. Akerman speaks and writes regularly on protecting computer data, including in his regular computer data column for the National Law Journal. He has been a featured quoted expert on computer fraud and computer security issues in the New York Times, USA Today, the San Jose Mercury News, the Boston Globe, the St. Louis Dispatch, the Sacramento Bee, Forbes, ComputerWorld, CFO Magazine, CNET, CNET Japan, ZDNet, MSN, Internet Week and the Weekly Homeland Security Newsletter. He has recently published “The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act: A Guide for General Counsels and CIOs.” Prior to private practice, Mr. Akerman served as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, as well as an Assistant Special Watergate Prosecutor with the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. He received his JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

3. Domingo J. Rivera is one of the foremost authorities on cyber defamation in the country. Mr. Rivera spent nearly two decades as a computer programmer, before pursuing a career as a cyberlaw and social media attorney. Initially an engineer for the United States Navy, Mr. Rivera drafted electrical engineering plans for the Armed Forces, and ultimately served as lead engineer for the construction of the Department of Defense’s state-of-the art Information Technology facility. Mr. Rivera also has experience advising attorneys and law firms regarding the technical aspects of legal issues related to information technology and electronic evidence. He was the first attorney in the United States to win a complex jury trial involving Federal Copyright Infringement, music piracy criminal allegations. He is an international authority on cyber defamation and has been called upon to provide insight for BBC, before millions of worldwide listeners. Mr. Rivera's firm and cases have been featured or reported on by The New York Times and The Washington Post, among others.
