Biography of Seminar Faculty:

1. Ruth Hill Bro has focused her legal career on advising businesses on privacy and information management strategy, cybersecurity, global compliance, e-workplace, and e-business. Ms. Hill Bro is a highly sought-after speaker and author, having lectured to over 180 audiences and has published over 90 works on these issues. A longstanding leader in the American Bar Association, she is a Special Advisor/immediate past Co-Chair of the Cybersecurity Legal Task Force; a leader in the Science & Technology Law Section (including past Section Chair and E-Privacy Law Committee Founder/Chair); and has served on numerous ABA-wide commissions/committees (e.g., Chair, Technology & Information Systems). Now a consultant after 15 years with two law firms, she is a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Chicago Law School.

2. John F. Weaver is Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Practice at McLane Middleton, where he is a leading transactional real estate attorney and authority on legal issues involving artificial intelligence. Mr. Weaver is a member of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Group, Director of the Corporate Department and Chair of the Real Estate Practice Group. He serves as outside real estate counsel to regional and national companies, overseeing the management, financing, and expansion of their real estate holdings. As a cybersecurity and privacy attorney, Mr. Weaver divides his practice between pre-breach and post-breach representation. Before a data breach, he conducts risk assessments of clients’ privacy and information security controls, oversees remediating information security vulnerabilities and gaps in privacy regulatory compliance, and negotiates data security agreements with their customers and vendors. After a data breach, Mr. Weaver is a nationally recognized voice in the nascent field of artificial intelligence law, advising a wide range of companies – from startups to international corporations – on regulatory and legal issues unique to artificial intelligence, including consumer protection requirements and privacy legislation. Mr. Weaver is the author of Robots Are People Too, released by Praeger Publishing, which explores legal issues implicated by autonomous technology and artificial intelligence, and a contributing writer at Slate magazine, where his articles focus on similar issues. Mr. Weaver is a sought after speaker on topics related to law and emerging technologies, and has been interviewed by The Atlantic, Consumer Reports, and the Boston Business Journal, among other media outlets. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and Boston College Law School.

3. Stephanie Wilson is Senior Counsel at Reed Smith LLP, where she has a national practice that consists primarily of litigating and handling cases concerning , whistle-blower claims, retaliation, unfair competition claims, the FCRA, ADA compliance, and discrimination for financial services, life sciences, higher education and publicly traded companies. Her practice extends also to the EEOC, AAA, FINRA, the SEC, the ICDR and other federal and state administrative agencies, among them the Department of Labor and state wage and hour divisions. Ms. Wilson provides training, counseling and advice on compliance issues, diversity and inclusion programs, implicit bias and internal investigations of complaints. She is a graduate of Yale University and Columbia Law School.

4. Stephen Wu is a Shareholder at Silicon Valley Law Group, where he assists clients with transactions, privacy, security, compliance, liability, and governance of information technologies, focusing on clients in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous and connected vehicles. Mr. Wu negotiates sales and marketing technology-related agreements, handles trade secret litigation, defends clients in other technology litigation, and advises clients on mergers and acquisition information technology issues. Steve also helps clients establish data privacy, security, and trade secret protection programs. An author/co-author of seven data security legal books and numerous other publications on AI and data protection topics, Mr. Wu is the founding Chair of the American Bar Association Artificial Intelligence and Robotics National Institute. Also, Mr. Wu served as a past Chair of the American Bar Association Science & Technology Law Section. Mr. Wu helped found the first American Bar Association committee on artificial intelligence and robotics. He had previously served as Co-Chair of the Section’s Information Security Committee. He previously practiced at two international law firms and later became the second in-house lawyer at data security vendor VeriSign, Inc. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
