Biography of Seminar Faculty:

1. Lara L. DeCaro is a Partner at Leland, Parachini, Steinberg, Matzger & Melnick, LLP, where she leads the Cannabis Law Group and the Trademark Groups. Ms. DeCaro is a full-service business counselor and third-party neutral with almost 25 years of experience in the areas of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, employment, intellectual property and brand protection, commercial transactions, and real property, and as a neutral in alternative dispute resolution. She has been named to Chambers and Partners for top cannabis attorneys, acted as lead counsel on multiple acquisitions of cannabis-related assets by publicly traded companies, and assisted in the drafting of open-source documents to reduce the costs of capital raises for cannabis corporations. Ms. DeCaro is a graduate of the University of Southern California and Tulane Law School.

2. James D. Thorburn is the Funding Partner at Thorburn Law Group, LLC. Mr. Thorburn's primary background is commercial litigation in both state and federal courts. Prior to entering the cannabis practice, his primary focus was litigation in the real estate and construction fields. Mr. Thorburn has focused on cannabis tax controversy law, taking on some of the most notable cannabis tax controversy cases in the nation. This experience made him a formidable force in cannabis tax controversy. Mr. Thorburn had the honor of arguing the Feinberg v. Commissioner, in front of now U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. The published decision has been described as a “technical loss but an artful win for the cannabis industry.” Mr. Thorburn is on the forefront of the current federal and state issues affecting dispensaries and works hard to achieve successful outcomes for his clients. He works with state and national legislators to effect positive legislative change for the cannabis industry. He helps dispensaries, grow facilities, and other businesses navigate through complex federal legal issues including tax court and IRS audits. Mr. Thorburn also provides general business representation, and helps dispensaries comply with the regulations under state cannabis laws. Mr. Thorburn has received a national recognition as a lead litigating attorney in the cannabis industry’s high-profile cases. He has been featured in CNBC, INC. Magazine, MJ Biz Daily, HBO (Vice News), Denver Post, Law360, Yahoo Finance, National Law Journal, The Californian, and others.

3. Justin Walsh is a Partner at Gleam Law, where he oversees all litigation at the firm. He represents clients in a myriad of civil matters, including legal marijuana, hemp, and CBD businesses. Mr. Walsh has received recognition for his successful representation of complex business litigation cases, as well as personal injury, medical malpractice, class action, and intellectual property cases. His practice extends to copyright and trademark matters, Consumer Protection Act, and CAN-SPAM, among other areas. In addition to heading Gleam Law’s litigation department, Mr. Walsh also handles matters of regulatory compliance surrounding hemp and CBD. He is especially known for his expertise on FDA labeling compliance, and he regularly speaks on the topic nationally. Mr. Walsh has served as an adjunct Professor of Law, teaching on Cannabis Law and Policy.
