HOW TO GROW: Plant seeds indoors or in a greenhouse in March, or 8-10 weeks before your last frost date. Plant quarter-inch deep and keep moist until germination. Seedlings must have direct, full sunlight. Plants cannot be exposed to freezing temperatures. Transplant outside after all danger of frost. Tomatoes begin to grow heavily in hot weather, but do not produce fruit in temperatures above 95 degrees. Harvest the tomatoes as they turn red and slightly soft to the touch. German Queen tomatoes are HUGE in size, almost always between 1-2 pounds each. They are determinate, which means the harvest will ripen all together in a short period. Determinate tomatoes are preferred for canning and freezing so that you have the whole crop ripe and ready to work at the same time. I put my German Queen tomatoes in a blender and freeze the sauce each fall for winter use. German Queen tomatoes provide the bulk of our tomato harvest for winter use because they are so large and set so many fruits. The plants will require supports. German Queen tomatoes are unusual because they are darker red inside than outside when ripe. They are a pinkish red on the outside but a deep red when cut open. They are meaty and juicy. Tomatoes may be pruned if you wish fewer fruits that are larger, but I don't prune my plants because I'm happy to have more tomatoes that are slightly smaller. Tomatoes tend to crack easily when overwatered. Make sure you reduce watering when tomatoes begin to ripen.
