A World of Knowing

SKU: $10.00
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was used to being left behind. He was a small, sickly child who grew up to be a small, sickly adult. But Thomas had a sharp mind and, even more important, a great determination to make a difference in the world. When he was a young man, Thomas met Alice Cogswell, a little girl who was deaf. Thomas began to work with Alice-to teach her to communicate. With the help of Alice's father, Thomas went to Europe to study deaf education. There he learned the miracle of communication with signs. He brought his new knowledge home to America and became principal of America's first school for the deaf. Gradually the signs Thomas learned in Europe developed into a new language-sign language. Through education, Thomas helped his students to leave their isolation behind and enter a world of knowing. 64 pages, black and white
