EDWARD III (1327-1377). By Jean Dassier. Bronze 41mm. Obv: Bust of Edward III, facing three-quarters left, in armor and wearing a laureate helmet. Legend: EDOUARD . III . D . G . ANG . FR . ET . HIB . REX. (Edward III, by the grace of God, king of England, France and Ireland). Rev: A circular temple with a niche containing a statue of Mars, symbolic of the king. On the base stand two putti one holding the Garter, the other a shield and palm branch allusions to the king's establishing the Order of the Garter and his victories.
