5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that tells your brain that you are satisfied and do not need to eat more. Serotonin deficiency contributes to weight gain, depression, sleeplessness, anxiety, inflammation, and joint pain, among other symptoms. Low serotonin levels also lead to carbohydrate cravings (sugar cravings) and overeating. 5-HTP can help reduce appetite while enhancing your mood and increasing energy levels.
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is broken down by vitamins, enzymes, and other co-factors into 5-HTP, and 5-HTP is then turned into serotonin.

5-HTP has also been extensively researched for the treatment of depression and anxiety. 5-HTP’s natural relief for depression and related problems also comes without side effects of pharmaceutical alternatives.
WEIGHT LOSS is another benefit of taking 5-HTP. A well-controlled trial used 5-HTP in obese individuals allowed to eat their usual diet for the first 6 weeks and a prescribed diet for the following 7 to 12 weeks. Researchers found a significant weight loss in the 5-HTP group.
5-HTP is very safe, but if you are taking MAO inhibitors, SSEIs (Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, Effexor, Zoloft) and/or the tricyclic anti-depressants (Elavil, Tofranil, Pamelor), do not take 5-HTP without discussing it with your healthcare provider.
