THE SHAKUHACHI IS A VERTICALLY PLAYED BAMBOO FLUTE FROM JAPAN. IT IS USED IN RELIGIOUS, FOLK AND CLASSICAL MUSIC.THE SHAKUHACHI’S PRECURSOR IS THE EGYPTIAN SERI END-BLOWN REED FLUTE WHICH WAS PASSED ON THROUGH ARABIA TO CENTRAL ASIA AND WESTERN INDIA, WHERE IT WAS FIRST PLAYED BY BUDDHIST MONKS.

THE RELIGIOUS CONNECTION HAS CONTINUED IN JAPAN, WHERE THE CHINESE FLUTE WAS REMODELLED TO BECOME THE SHAKUHACHI USED IN ZEN BUDDHISM. IT BECAME POPULAR AS AN ADJUNCT TO MEDITATION, AND SINCE THE 14TH CENTURY THE FLUTE HAS BEEN PLAYED FOR THE PUBLIC BY WANDERING BEGGAR PRIESTS KNOWN AS KOMUSO.

THE KOTO IS A LARGE 13 STRING ZITHER MADE FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF PALONIA WOOD. PICKS ARE USED TO PLUCK THE STRINGS, AND THE PERFORMER MUST KNEEL TO PLAY. THIS INSTRUMENT IS USED IN SOLO AND ENSEMBLE MUSIC AS WELL AS AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO SONGS, POETRY AND DANCE.THE KOTO CAME TO JAPAN FROM CHINA AROUND THE 8TH CENTURY A.D. IT WAS USED TO ACCOMPANY SINGERS IN ANCIENT RITES IN THE JAPANESE COURTS OF NOBILITY. IT DEVELOPED INTO ITS PRESENT FORM DURING MEDIEVAL TIMES,AND SINCE THAT PERIOD IT HAS BEEN USED IN SACRED SHRINE MUSIC CALLED KAGURA THAT HONOURS THE SHINTO GODS AND GODDESSES.

THE PERFORMERS

TANAKA YOKO BEGAN STUDYING KOTO WITH HER MOTHER, KYAKUDEN MIYAKD,IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND LATER CONTINUED HER STUDIES WITH SAWAI TADAO. As WELL AS BEING A FINE KOTO PLAYER, MRS. TANAKA IS AN ACCOMPLISHED SINGER AND SHAMISEN PLAYER.

TANI SENZAN STUDIED UNDER UYEDA KADO OF THE UYEDA SHAKUHACHI SCHOOL. MR. TANI RECEIVED HIS HEADMASTER STATUS IN 1977, AFTER WINNING THE UYEDA NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR. MR. TANI AND MRS. TANAKA HAVE EACH WON TOP HONOURS IN THE JAPANESE BROADCASTING CORPORATION (N.H.K.) NATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION.
