Observation:
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

The Merck Manual Home Edition states:
" Dry mouth (xerostomia) is caused by a reduced or absent flow of saliva. This condition can cause discomfort, interfere with speech and swallowing, make wearing dentures difficult, cause bad breath (halitosis), and worsen oral hygiene by causing a decrease in the acidity of the mouth and an increase in bacterial growth. Longstanding dry mouth can result in severe tooth decay and candidiasis of the mouth. Dry mouth is a common complaint among older people.

Dry mouth is most often caused by Drugs(anticholinergic, blood pressure, anti-depressant, anti-parkinson, chemotherapy), Radiation (cancer treatment), tobacco, illegal recreational drug use (methamhetamine, marijuana), and rarely, H.I.V. (A.I.D.s). Connective tissue diseases such as Sjogren's Syndrome can cause a dry mouth, dry eyes and rash. The diagnoses require laboratory testing most available on-line.

Medications Used in Treatment:
1. Chewing gum with xylitol
2. Pilocarpine
3. Meticulous oral hygiene
4. Avoid caffeine and food sensitivities

[Editor] A number of over-the-counter remedies have been offered as natural treatments:
1. Sugar/ Baking Soda/ Salt Mixture: 1 tbsp Sugar; 1 teaspoon Salt; 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda; splash of Lemon or lime. Mix, room temperature, drunk.
2. Goldenseal 1 cup liquid with 1 tbsp baking soda. Swish in mouth 1-2 minutes and do not swallow.
3. Natrum Muriarticum (homeopathic) place under tongue as directed.
4. Cayenne Pepper; 1/2 teaspoon in 4 ounces of water. Drinking this hot spice stimulates saliva.
5. Aloe Vera Juice: drinking and swishing relieves dry mouth.

As the cause of dry mouth may be difficult to determine, the editor suggests performing a comprehensive H.I.S. or H.E.R. Laboratory Blood Panel. This site offers insight into what is considered mid-range reference range values. The sedimentation rate is a simple marker of inflammatory conditions such as Sjogren's Syndrome. The laboratory tests may help define vitamin, mineral, nutrient and hormonal deficiencies. Over-the-counter supplements may be available at the on-line Vitamin site
