SUMMARY:
There is no consensus on the older term "ADD" which probably referred to young women who are predominantly inattentive. The newer term is ADHD-I. There appears to be "a subtype×gender interaction that affects the perception of fatigue, as subjective fatigue was markedly higher in ADHD- Inattentive women than in ADHD-C (Combined with hyperactivity) women" that may affect treatment.
Treatment leads toward CNS stimulants.

Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD)

is an old term that identified a different population than ADHD. These children are
1. predominantly girls not boys,
2. predominantly hypo-active and not disruptive
3. typically diagnosed as anxious and depressed and
4. treated with anti-depressants.

Medications Used in the Treatment:
1. Central Nervous System Stimulants: Adderall®, Ritalin®, Amphetamine®, Concerta®, Strattera®, and more
2. SSRIs: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: Celexa®, Prozac®, Cymbalta®, and more
3. Benzodiazepines: Xanax®, Ativan®, Klonipin®

*[Editor]: Israeli report use of metadoxine extended release to be most significantly more beneficial in ADHD with predominantly inactive symptoms. The company, Alcobra Ltd., suggests metadoxine, a selective antagonist to the 5-HT2B receptor "enhances the ability of cells to correct abnormal signaling pathways that may be involved with cognitive impairment, while not increasing levels of neurotranmitters in the brain such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin." Riluzole is approved for treatment of ALS and is used off-label in Obsessive Compulsive Disorders resistant to standard therapy.

*[Editor]: Iron Deficiency "increase the risk of psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and developmental disorders. ...because the development of central nervous system processes is highly dependent on iron-containing enzymes and proteins. Deficiency of iron in early life may increase the risk of psychiatric morbidity."

[Editor]: The benefit of nutritional supplementation in the treatment of ADHD is unquestionable underutilized. The authors found published studies best on Zinc, mixed evidence for carnitine, pycnogenol and essential fatty acids. More research is needed.... about vitamins,magnesium, SAM-e and Ginkgo biloba with ginseng.
